Fruottula or Bread Festival – Cefalù

One of the oldest traditional festivals of Cefalù, the Bread Festival, or Fruottula, is in homage to the ancient Trades and Guild festivals and is now celebrated a day before Corpus Domini, of which it was historically an integral part. Farmers, on this day, dressed in a highly distinct manner: black suit, white gloves and shirt, black bow tie and bowler hat. Only one of them would wear peasant clothes, and he would – during post-war editions – open the procession holding a sickle and grain, singing the praises of bread.
