The Festival of St. John in January – Vittoria

The festival in honour of this town’s patron saint takes place on January 11 as well, in memory of the great earthquake that destroyed much of south-eastern Sicily in 1693. Although few people died in Vittoria due to the quake, there was much damage to the Mother Church and two convents, the delle Grazie and San Francesco di Paola. The city credited St. John with having saved its people from the earthquake and elected him their Patron Saint.
