Last Sunday in May: the fishermen of Ustica’s Feast of the Madonna

On the last Sunday of May the statue of the Madonna is hoisted onto a boat and then sailed, along with a myriad of other boats, around the entire circumference of the island. The event begins with a procession in which the Madonna is carried from her mother church all the way to the harbour, accompanied by the city marching band. The faithful then board fishing boats together with the band and, as the sun sets, they sail around the island. Upon their return, Mass is celebrated and then, in the little harbour of Ustica, a huge pan of fried fish is offered to all, along with wine. Dancing and group games conclude the evening.
